Concept Mapping

In order to help pupils better understand Physics concepts and elicit alternate concepts (misconceptions), I'll be introducing concept mapping to my pupils and would like them to construct concept maps on the topics which they have learnt.

You may have heard about mindmaps. However, how different is mindmap to concept map?

Concept map allow learner to establish relationship between concepts and usually used to answer a focus questions. Concept maps are arranged or organised in hierachical structure. In addition, concepts can be cross-linked.

Both mindmapping and concept mapping serve different purposes. In learning scientific concepts, I prefer the use of concept mapping as it require the learner to establish the relationship between concepts using a linking phrase. In this way, the learner understands the relationships among concepts thus represent their knowledge of the topic.

Concept mapping can be done using pen and paper. Not only just the limit on the space on paper, some advantages of constructing concept maps using computer software also include online collaboration.

You may download a copy of concept mapping software at http:://cmap.ihmc.us.

Pupils' Perception of Physics

After marking Sec 3I's test scripts. I had the following hypothesis:

1) Pupils perceived Physics as a very difficult subject, thus lost their common sense.

2) Pupils perceived Physics as a very difficult subject, thus lose the interest in the subject.

3) Pupils perceived Physics as a very difficult subject, thus do not know how to organise the information/knowledge.

Please comment.

Science Practical Assessment (SPA) on 2 Sep 09 (Skill 1 & 2)

Sec 3I & 3K would be having their SPA on 2 Sep 2009 (Day 8).

Topic covered today...
1) Revision on Current Electricity

Electromotive Force or emf is the amount of energy required to drive a unit charge throughout a circuit.

Potential Difference (p.d.) is the amount of energy required to drive a unit charge across an electrical component/load (such as resistor, bulb, etc.)

Current (I) is the amount of charges that flows in one second.

We also covered Ohm's law. The function derived from Ohm's law: V=IR
where
V= p.d. in volts
I= current in ampere
R= resistance in ohms
