Term 3 Week 3 Day 2 (Lesson with Sec 3H: 800h - 910h)

Covered Static Electricity till "Charging by Induction".

The lesson on Friday will be covering the applications of Static Electricity.

Pupils are to complete their worksheets given today and submit on Friday.

The test on Static Electricity will be held on 24 July 09 (Friday, Day 10).

Term 3 Week 3, Lesson with Sec 3I (910h - 945h)

Introduced Practical Electricity to Sec 3I. Most likely to complete this topic by end of this week as scheduled.

I felt that some of the pupils need more help than the other. I was thinking to setting a "Physics Mentor Group" in this class to help those who are weak in the subject. I shall approach those pupils.

Concept Mapping

In order to help pupils better understand Physics concepts and elicit alternate concepts (misconceptions), I'll be introducing concept mapping to my pupils and would like them to construct concept maps on the topics which they have learnt.

You may have heard about mindmaps. However, how different is mindmap to concept map?

Concept map allow learner to establish relationship between concepts and usually used to answer a focus questions. Concept maps are arranged or organised in hierachical structure. In addition, concepts can be cross-linked.

Both mindmapping and concept mapping serve different purposes. In learning scientific concepts, I prefer the use of concept mapping as it require the learner to establish the relationship between concepts using a linking phrase. In this way, the learner understands the relationships among concepts thus represent their knowledge of the topic.

Concept mapping can be done using pen and paper. Not only just the limit on the space on paper, some advantages of constructing concept maps using computer software also include online collaboration.

You may download a copy of concept mapping software at http:://cmap.ihmc.us.

Pupils' Perception of Physics

After marking Sec 3I's test scripts. I had the following hypothesis:

1) Pupils perceived Physics as a very difficult subject, thus lost their common sense.

2) Pupils perceived Physics as a very difficult subject, thus lose the interest in the subject.

3) Pupils perceived Physics as a very difficult subject, thus do not know how to organise the information/knowledge.

Please comment.

Science Practical Assessment (SPA) on 2 Sep 09 (Skill 1 & 2)

Sec 3I & 3K would be having their SPA on 2 Sep 2009 (Day 8).

Sec 3I: 800h to 910h
Sec 3K: 1135h to 1245h

Please come to the Physics lab 5 minutes earlier.

Remember to bring all the necessary equipment for the SPA.

Term 3 Week 2 Day 8

Practical Sessions with Sec 3I & 3K

This practical session is on Moment of a force and centre of gravity.

Many pupils are having problem of selecting scale for their graphs and explaining the possible errors/precautions.

You may be able to find solutions to these problems in the Practical Workbook.

Term 3 Week 2 Day 7

Lesson with Sec 3K (Period 9 & 10, 1245h to 1350h)
These two periods were used for the selection of the participants for the Singapore Junior Physics Olympiad (SJPO). It's a 1-hour quiz with 50 MCQs. Good luck to you guys.

Lesson with Sec 3I (Period 12 & 13, 1425h to 1535h))

Practical session with Sec 3H, on Electricity (Experiment A9). Only a handful of pupils brought along their practical workbook. Do take note and bring along the practical workbook for future practical sessions.

Term 3 Week 1 Day 5 Lesson with Sec 3H (1245h-1320h)

We have completed "Practical Electricity" and the class is ready for the class test in week 2.

Do check the date of the class test.

Term 3 Week 1 Lesson with Sec 3I (835h-945h)

Worked through practical worksheet E2 with Sec 3I.

The last 15 minutes of the lesson was on Work, Energy & Power. We went through the transfer of GPE and KE.

This is to prepare them for the class test in week 2. Do check the date of the class test.

Term 3 Week 1 Day 4 (Sec 3K - 1245h - 1350h)

I went through some questions on E2 worksheets.

You guys should be able to complete all 3 worksheets and hand up to me for marking.

The notes on Static Electricity were given out. Please read through the notes and access those resources (websites) mentioned in the notes.

Two pupils wished to discuss with me on Current Electricity and Electrical Circuit. You could come over to Physics Lab 1 on Tuesday (7 Jul 09) at 3.35pm. In the meantime, checkout this biogsite as I'll be putting up some more resources on these two topics.

Term 3 Week 1 Day 4 (Sec 3I - 1135h - 1245h)

Sec 3I did the same experiments (E1 - E3) with Sec 3K today.

Please bring along your worksheet tomorrow so that we can go through some of the questions.

Videos on Work, Energy & Power (Specially for Sec 3I)

Video clips on Work, Energy & Power

Practical Session with Sec 3K (0910h - 1020h)

Sec 3K had completed their practical session on Current Electricity.

These experiments (E1 to E3) are related to the Ohm's law and the variables are potential difference (in volts), current (in ampere) and resistance (in ohms).

The completed lab worksheets are to be submitted by the next day.

Class Test on Week 2

There will be a test on "Work, Energy & Power" on week 2 for Sec 3I & 3K.

Class: Sec 3I
Date & Time: 9 Jul 09 (Day 9), 1245h - 1315h

Class: Sec 3K
Date & Time: 7 Jul 09 (Day 7), 1320h - 1350h

Please bring along 2 pieces of A4 lined paper (foolscap) for the test. And of course, calculator and writing material.
